Webinar: Transformative Knowledge Networks

The Transformations to Sustainability programme of the International Social Science Council (ISSC) has announced an open webinar that will air on 5 July at 17:00 CEST. The Transformations programme, which is managed by the International Social Science Council (ISSC), represents a significant contribution to Future Earth. In this webinar, you will hear more about the programme and its three funded research networks and hear about how they are co-developing integrated research led by social scientists on topics such as environmental justice and conflict; sustainable urban water and agricultural systems; and how learning can create transformative change towards sustainability.

Research on global change and sustainability increasingly goes hand in hand with calls for profound change and social transformation – but what do we know about these processes in different, concrete contexts of application? What can social science-led research contribute to generating solutions and transformative change towards sustainability and social justice?

Join us for a webinar with researchers from the Transformations to Sustainability Transformative Knowledge Networks to discuss solutions-oriented research in practice. Find out more about how the networks intend to contribute to transformative change towards sustainability and social justice, ask questions and share ideas on solutions-oriented research involving co-design and co-production. This webinar will also generate discussions and new ideas for the Future Earth Transformations Knowledge-Action Network, a collaborative platform for research and engagement on societal transformations to sustainability.

• Mathieu Denis, Executive Director, International Social Science Council (ISSC).
• Adrian Ely, Transformative pathways to sustainability: learning across disciplines, contexts and cultures (PATHWAYS) network; STEPS Centre (Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability), United Kingdom. PATHWAYS focuses on three themes:sustainable urban water and waste; low carbon energy transitions for the poor; and sustainable agricultural and food systems for healthy livelihoods.
• Ashish Kothari, Academic-Activist Co-Produced Knowledge for Environmental Justice (ACKnowl-EJ) network; Kalpavriksh Environment Action group, India. The ACKnowl-EJ network will emphasize and dissect the processes of knowledge production against ‘extractivism’ and towards transformative sustainability from the ground up.
• Heila Lotz-Sisitka, Transgressive Social Learning for Social-Ecological Sustainability in times of Climate Change (T-LEARNING); Rhodes University, South Africa. Changes in human activities and social systems are critical to mitigating climate change and creating transformations to sustainability; T-LEARNING focuses on the type of learning that creates such change, how such learning emerges, or how it can be scaled-up to create transformations at many levels.

The discussion will be moderated by Susi Moser, Senior Advisor to the Transformations to Sustainability programme and member of the Future Earth Science Committee.
