Habitat III: Future Earth-ICSU-Potsdam University event space

The Habitat X Change space is a unique platform located in the Habitat III exhibition space dedicated to science, cities and data visualisation. Our events include master classes on visualisation, panel discussions, a magazine launch and networking. We’re also offering free, locally-sourced coffee prepared with love by a Quito-based team of baristas. Please join us, and share with your networks!

13:00 – 14:30: App launch: 60 solutions for African cities. How can people in sub-Saharan Africa achieve the most with limited resources?

Monday, 17 October

10:00 – 11:30: Visualizing cities. Results from an open call for data visualisations on the future of cities.

13:00 – 14:30: Healthy cities – Why the health of people and planet depend on one another. How a focus on health can unlock progress and reduce inequalities in cities.

14:30 – 16:00: Book launch: An Urban Planet. The latest transdisciplinary perspectives on urbanisation and the environment.

16:00 – 17:30: Anthropocene magazine launch. An international magazine on creating a sustainable human age.

Tuesday, 18 October

10:30 – 11:30: Linking knowledge to policy. How can the scientific community contribute to the New Urban Agenda after Quito?

12:00 – 12:45: The role of media in building better cities. How independent journalism can help cities and their citizens learn from one another and innovate rapidly, strengthening the push toward sustainable urbanisation. This event will take place in the "Urban Future" room in Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana, G/F, Benjamín Carrión, the main conference venue.

13:00 – 14:30: Launch of the Urban Knowledge-Action Network. The network will bring together researchers, policymakers and practitioners to co-produce the knowledge needed for sustainable cities.

14:30 – 16:00: Knowledge and Capacity after Quito. Mapping out academia’s commitment to the New Urban Agenda and sustainable urbanization

16:00 – 17:30: Open Data & citizen engagement. Creating more transparency and new opportunities for urban planners, scientists, businesses and citizens.

Wednesday, 19 October

10:00 – 11:30: Workshop: Mapping data with Carto. This workshop will demonstrate the changing nature of open source location intelligence and geospatial analysis.

11:30 – 13:00: VR film launch: Voices from the Favela. A film about the community living in the Gereba favela outside the Brazilian city of Fortaleza.

13:00 – 14:30: Data, Visualization & the City. Science, Business & Civic Perspectives on the opportunities of data and visualization in the urban context.

14:30 – 16:00: Building urban resilience to extreme events. This event will explore the ways that cities are building resilience to extreme events like urban flooding, heat waves, coastal flooding, and drought.

16:00 – 17:00: Press conference: Visualizing Cities. How data visualisation helps us understand the urban realm and underlying relationships and connections, providing a strong basis for creating sustainable urban futures. This event will take place in Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana, G/F, Benjamín Carrión, the main conference venue.

Thursday, 20 October

9:00 – 10:00: Press conference: Science and the New Urban Agenda. Priorities for linking knowledge to policy and making the implementation of the New Urban Agenda a success. This event will take place in Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana, Benjamín Carrión, the main conference venue.

11:00 – 12:00: The time for cities and science to work together is now. What a dialogue between the cities and science communities can look like in the future. In partnership with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group.
