Air pollution has emerged as a major environmental problem in Asia and extraordinary smog and haze events regularly come to the top of the international news. While the scale of the problem is obvious, both the specific mechanisms underlying the problem and possible solutions are still under investigation. Future Earth has prioritized health as one of its key challenges and is in the process of establishing a Knowledge-Action Network on this issue. Regional Future Earth meetings in Asia also have identified air pollution as an urgent topic for regional research collaboration. The Session built on such earlier discussions and had as objectives to:

  • Assess the impact of air pollution on health in Asia;
  • Identify knowledge gaps and potential areas where co-design and co-production of research can contribute to solving the problems;
  • Explore possible research collaborations in the region.
